My Dinner at Mother

Hey guys!  It’s been such a busy week that Nana didn’t get around to making a recipe for you this week.  But in honor of Nana (her birthday was yesterday–she would have been 93), and mother’s everywhere, I will tell you about my visit to Mother Restaurant.

My sweetie took me to Mother for Valentine’s Day.  And no, I don’t mean my mother’s house, or his mother’s house (not that there’s anything wrong with that)–but Sacramento’s hottest new joint since…I don’t know.  Since Sacramento had a hottest new joint?

This joint happens to be 100% vegetarian.  Not because anyone involved is particularly vegetarian, I don’t think, but I do know that the chef-owner Michael Thiemann did wonderful things with plant life when he worked at Ella.  Thiemann opened this place with my former editor and photographer extraordinaire at Edible Sacramento, Ryan Donahue.  He’s probably going to see these pictures and cringe.

I’ve only been the one time (so far) but I know several people, my spouse included, that have been going several times a week since their opening.  That’s pretty remarkable for a new place.

As expected, they are focusing on foods that are in season–kind of a necessity when working with veg–but there was quite a variety of imaginative dishes on the menu.  We went for the “chef’s choice” tasting menu:  10 items for $40.  It was fun! Lots of completely different tastes, textures, ideas:  From a beet and rose salad to Buffalo-style chicken fried oyster mushrooms to fresh pasta to smoked eggplant gumbo to huitlacoche taco to roasted mushrooms with black truffle to mushroom poutine.  And that is just some of the savory stuff.

P.S.  Those cute little black bowls shown all stack–very clever–and were purchased at KP International Korean Market off of Zinfandel in Rancho Cordova.

Our last two dishes were sweets.  One was decadent chocolate truffles with grapefruit (no pic, truffles don’t really photograph well–at least not on an iPhone), and this cookie.  This little cookie is currently the talk o’ the town.  It’s a salted brown butter number.  Very good and very addicting.  It’s hard to not buy some to take home.

Vegetarian or not, get your butt down to Mother and eat some good food.
