One morning on my last trip to Los Angeles, I went on a wild goose chase for a Kouign Amann. Literally. I drove for 30 minutes to a place that ended up being closed, then drove for another 40 minutes to a different bakery on the outer hinterlands of Wilshire Blvd. It was worth it. That’s the Kouign above, on the lower right. That cylindrical looking thing. It may not look like much, but I swear to baby Jesus that it might be the most delicious pastry ever invented. Amandine’s version is stuffed with apples. In Breton, the kouign amann is literally translated as “butter cake”. I would publicly like to thank the country of France for bringing the kouign amann to me and the rest of the world.
