The Annual Summer Trek for Peach Shakes

by Sarah on August 12, 2011

Readers, meet Whitey’s Jolly Kone. It resides in West Sacramento, California. It’s a whole different Sacramento and it lives right across the river. In fact, if you walked west from my house and swam across the river, you could probably walk to Whitey’s. But I am not that stupid or ambitious. I just get in my car and drive.

Whitey’s is a great old-fashioned drive-in burger place.  Good any time of the year, really.  Well, except for weekends…when they are not open.  Then they’re not great.  But JULY, and AUGUST?  That’s when Whitey’s becomes exceptional.  Because they truck in fresh, ripe, juicy peaches from an area farm and they start making these insane peach shakes.  Ice cream and smushed up peaches.  There is nearly nothing better.

Whitey's of West Sac

These shakes are so good that the local newspapers usually report on when Whitey’s starts serving them.

Look for the peach shake sign!

And when you say “I’m going to Whitey’s”, or “Last night I went to Whitey’s”, the FIRST THING any respectable Sacramentan will ask you is “Are you going to/Did you get a peach shake?”  To which the answer is always…”Duh”.

Zane is excited about his shake.

I particularly love that Whitey’s doesn’t try to fancy these up in any way.  It’s vanilla ice cream–the soft serve kind–mixed with the freshest peaches around.  That’s it.  That’s all that’s required!  They wouldn’t be as good if they were tampered with.

We've waited all year....

I’m always stupid and get a small.  And then regret only getting a small because I feel dumb getting another one.

Well worth the long drive over the river.

You can always assuage your disappointment for only buying a small shake by eating a burger and onion rings.  By the way, Whitey’s is that GOOD kind of old-fashioned drive-in that sells deep fried burritos and fried zucchini and tacos along with their burgers.  I dig that.  That’s some old-school eats!  When I was in 7th and 8th grades, we used to hang out at a joint like Whitey’s called Marie’s Drive-In (sadly, now gone).  It was across from our middle school (Sylvan Squires–holla!).  I totally used to eat deep fried burritos and wash them down with chocolate chip shakes.  And then go to gymnastics practice.  With feathered hair and Hawaiian Vans.  Ah, good times.

The burgers aren't bad neither.

Oh yeah!  Peach shakes!  They’re the shit.  Well they’re not SHIT.  You know what I mean.  They’re GOOD.  Really, really good.  Especially if you like peaches.  I think I will just shut up now.  This is what happens when you have a headache for 5 days in a row, you become slightly loopy.
