Nana Recipe Wednesday–Cherry Dump

by Sarah on June 15, 2011

Truly, “Cherry Dump” is the worst name for a food item–possibly ever.  I understand what they were getting at–open a few cans and a container of Kool Whip, ‘dump’ them into a bowl, stir.  The end.  It still sounds disgusting.

But it was actually pretty darn good.  Really!  Granted, I took a few liberties with the recipe.  I had to.  The original involved canned cherry pie filling.  Do they even make canned cherry pie filling anymore?  I opted to go the canned sour cherries route instead–I felt the pie filling would likely be way too cloyingly sweet.

I think Nana would’ve approved of my improvements.  I will admit to being a little scared of this one, especially because I took it to a pot luck–but it turned out surprisingly well and I garnered quite a few compliments on it.

So, for Nana’s recipe you just stir together the pie filling, condensed milk, pineapple and Kool Whip and refrigerate.  For my version, swap out the pie filling for Oregon sour cherries (drained), stir together with the other stuff, add 1/4 cup cherry or strawberry jam and a handful of fresh raspberries, cherries or strawberries.

My version?  One more step but oh, so worth it.  The sour cherries gave all the sweet stuff a little edge, and the jam gave it a little freshness (well, I used fresh strawberry jam).
