The Dark End of the Street

I’m obsessed with this song. It just kills me every time I hear it.

Not that I’m advocating that any of you sneak around on your significant other and screw around, mind you.  I’m not as much of a fan of the song “You Fucking Bastard I’m Going to Cut Your Balls Off”—it just doesn’t have the same soulful quality.

The Percy Sledge version is famous (btw, that was recorded in 2008, he still sounds pretty great), and the Burrito Bros is fairly well known, but check out some of these others I found while traveling the webs late one night:

Here’s Billy Bragg commenting that “Dark End of the Street” is one of his favorite songs. I love this man–hey, but don’t get the wrong idea, I’m not going to meet him on the dark end of the street–we’re both happily married y’all.  He’s currently in the States, so if he’s coming to your town go see him.  He’s fantastic live.

Lee Hazelwood and Ann-Margaret?  You’re killing me. How delightfully weird.

You’ve seen the movie, right?  This scene is pretty classic–the calm before the storm.  Pretty good for a white Irish dude.  He could really use an orthodontist though.

Even Alex Chilton got in on this act.  Sonic version.  I like it.  Look at that picture though–he looks like a total A/V nerd.  (Not that there’s anything wrong with that)

And Linda Ronstadt!  Dang, look how hot she is.  Reason enough to vote for Jerry Brown.

Richard and Linda Thompson.  I had never heard this one before, it’s pretty.  Interesting that this is why Richard and Linda ended up splitting…..old Richard was meeting someone else at the dark end of the street.

Another good soul version, heavy on the organ, almost churchy–which kind of works for me.  Not surprising that Oscar got his start singing gospel.

Dolly and Porter!  They recorded it in kind of a cheery way, which comes across a little odd.

The original, the best.  James Carr.
