Taco Tuesday! Mom’s Easy Turkey Tacos

by Sarah on September 14, 2010

Let me just get this out of the way now:  Today’s tacos are brought to you by MOM, not MEXICO.  These tacos are UN-authentic in every possible way.  But they taste good, are easy on a Tuesday night and everyone’s happy.  That’s it.  Back to our regularly scheduled programming.

Easy stuff here, all available at any supermarket.  Tortillas, salsa, ground turkey, etc.

Start by sauteeing some chopped onion and garlic in a couple Tbsp of oil over medium heat.  When they are wilted, add the spices and oregano and let cook for a few minutes.

The onion will be cooked and the spices will cook in the oil and not taste “raw”.

Add in the ground turkey and break up into chunks.  I let this sit a while before stirring it because I like it to get browned.

When the turkey is cooked, add a goodly amount of your favorite salsa.  I like to use the Southwest varieties of salsa because they have some black beans and corn in there.  But really, just whatever cheap inauthentic salsa you got.

Stir it up and add some chopped cilantro.

Get your garnishes (cheese, lettuce, avocado, tomato, hot sauce) ready and heat up the tortillas.  Corn are probably better, but all I had in the house was flour tortillas.  These ARE fake tacos, so flour tortillas are fine.

Everyone can fix ‘em up however they want.  I just leave everything on the counter like in the photo above and the folks can come by like a salad bar.  Also, I don’t have to do more dishes.

It’s no Lalo’s (or whatever good taco you have in your neighborhood), but they’re satisfying and DO taste quite good, if I say so myself.

Besides, it’s Tuesday for crying out loud.  Aren’t you tired?  These will literally take you 10 minutes.  Open a bag of salad and you’re set.
