Nana Recipe Wednesday—Barbeque Baked Beans

by Undercover Caterer on May 5, 2010

Nana and Aunt Kay: Sisters, buddies, traveling companions, outstanding collectors of delicious recipes.  Aunt Kay lives in Virginia and I haven’t seen her since Boppa died in 1995.  Exciting newsflash!  I get to see her again this summer in Minnesota!  Maybe we can make these beans together.

I think this is another classic case of “Whose Recipe Is It”?  Nana made this recipe ALL.  THE.  TIME.  for backyard cookouts and parties, but at least one copy attributes the recipe to Aunt Kay.  It’s a good ‘un for a crowd–you can assemble it ahead of time and then just put it in the oven to cook when you’re ready.

I halved the recipe this time, so for the full recipe you’ll need 2 cans each of the beans.  The original recipe calls for pork ‘n beans but I prefer Ranch beans (with or without jalapeno).

First, brown the ground beef and bacon in a Dutch oven.

Add the onion and saute until soft.  Add the spices and  let cook for a minute.

Here’s the complicated part:  Dump everything else in.

Stir it up carefully so you don’t smoosh the beans.

If you wanted to, you could just leave it on the cooktop until it’s warmed through and eat it, as is.

But if you have a bit of patience, you can put it in the oven for an hour and you will be duly rewarded.  Leave the lid on for about 1/2 hour, then take it off.

Grill some dogs, make some slaw or salad, and serve them forth.

P.S.  That’s a 1/4 lb. Nathan’s hot dog.  A very good hot dog.

Smoky, a bit sweet, with bits of bacon….you just can’t resist.  Summer’s coming!

2 16-oz cans pork ‘n beans (I used Ranch beans)
