The Happiest Hour of All

by Sarah on January 19, 2010

Everyone in Sacramento, including myself, have written about Magpie Cafe.  We all love it.  There’s probably not a lot more I can say about it.
Except.  Happy Hour.
We tried almost everything the other night.
Cheese plate—that Rouge et Noir camembert paired with a date was divine.
Charcuterie with olives and peppers.
Winter squash guacamole.  Don’t know why they termed it guacamole, except maybe to get people to order it.  Don’t like it.  It’s not guacamole.  But it was good.  Sweet and savory.
G liked the beer.  $5.  Too hoppy for me.  I thought it tasted like metal.
Mussels.  Sweet, sweet mussels.  With saffron cream and the most fantastic caramelized fennel on top.
Hello, my plump little friend.
Yum.  I got a little carried away with the mussel photos.
The other beers offered (Eel River Organic Blonde Ale and Sudwerk Marzen)
were only $3 and the wine was $4 per glass.  They only offered one choice for red and white.  I tried the red (Latcham Vineyards Gold Rush Red) which was a good, easy, uncomplicated wine.
